Morgan Park Summer Music Festival will present Young Performers in Concert and Gathering Time on Sunday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Glen Cove’s Morgan Park.
Young Performers in Concert reveals the rich talents to be found among North Shore music students. Performing this evening as winners of the 2018 Marguerite Suozzi Young Performers Talent Competition are the following exceptionally talented musicians.
Marco Motroni, a Manhasset High School freshman, age 15, won second place in the Performers Talent Competition. He will be performing Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26 on Sunday. He will be joined by senior winners (tie) pianists Veselin Nivov, age 17, and Stephen Philipps, age 18, and junior winner pianist Timothy Pang, age 11. Motroni is a member of the Manhasset High School Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Caroline Shyr.
Also performing are honorable mentions: Emilia Cortale, vocals; Christopher Kontos, piano, Lexy Cassall, vocals and Jason Yu, piano.
The folk-rock harmony trio Gathering Time, which participated in the 2017 Folk Festival, has been described as reflecting the 1960s folk tradition of Peter, Paul & Mary combined with the vocal complexities of Crosby, Stills & Nash, with a bit of Joni Mitchell and the Byrds. Following their albums, Red Apples and Gold (2012) and When One Door Closes (2014), the group swept the folk music charts with its 2016 album, Keepsake. John Platt of WFUV said, “Gathering Time has harmonies that can charm the birds out of the trees.”
