Manhasset High School New York State boys swimming qualifiers Thomas Broderick, Matt Giardinelli, Matt Kang and Luca Sodi competed in the NYS Public High School and NYS Federation Swim Championships Preliminaries.
At preliminaries, Manhasset’s individual event state qualifiers Giardinelli and Broderick had great swims to qualify for the State Finals on Saturday. Freshman Matthew Giardinelli swam a personal best 4:47.99 in the 500-yard freestyle. At the State Finals Giardinelli finished 20th in the NYS Public School Championships. Broderick, a senior and a two-time state qualifier, competed in the 200- yard individual medley and 100 backstroke for the second consecutive season NYS State Championship meet. In the 200-yard IM, Broderick swam a strong preliminary race to earn his first state final in this event. At state finals, Broderick finished 14th in the 200-yard individual medley.
In his best event, the 100 yard backstroke, Broderick set a new school record at state preliminaries to qualify for his second consecutive state finals and his first championship final (top 10) heat, qualifying as the eighth seed.
At Saturday’s state finals Broderick improved his school record time from 51.97 to 51.78 to finish third in the NYS Public School Championship. His third place finish was the highest finish for a Manhasset High School swimmer since Manhasset High School Hall of Fame Inductee Greg Mone (finished first in 1993) and also earned him All-Long Island and All-State honors. Congratulations to Broderick on an outstanding High School career. Good luck to him next year as he swims for Division 1 Davidson College.
