Spring Has Sprung! Animals For Adoption On Long Island

Adoption

April 30th marks “National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day” and it’s quickly approaching! In the U.S. alone, approximately 6.5 million animals find their way into animal shelters every year, typically through no fault of their own. This makes April the “purr-fect” place to find your “pawsitively” “pawsome” new best friend and save a life today!

Available for adoption at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter

Adoption

*Senior Alert* 8-year-old Elle found herself at the shelter after being seized from a homeowner’s garage with five other cats who were living in deplorable conditions. Since arriving, she is starting to settle, even loves being pet (as long as you take it slow). She is good with other low-key feline companions and needs some time before being picked up. Elle is a sweet girl who just looks for a cozy spot to take a nap in the glare of the sun. Some of her housemates have already been adopted, so it’s her turn now. She will thrive in a calm home, with teens (15yrs +).

Adoption

*Senior Alert* Saddie arrived at the shelter after her owner was evicted. She arrived with six cats total, all of them a little nervous at first but will warm up in a calm, adult home. Saddie is doing well in the shelter’s cattery space and is slowly making friends. All this 8.5 year old lady needs is a forever home that comes equipped with a cat tree to perch atop where she can watch the world go by. She gets a little over-stimulated, so she needs a home where she isn’t expected to be a lap cat (once she feels settled this can change). She isn’t overly playful but doesn’t appear to be bothered by the other felines walking around.

If you would like more information about adopting Elle or Saddie, contact the shelter’s placement team by emailing Adoption@hempsteadny.gov, Foster@hempsteadny.govRescue@hempsteadny.gov or calling 516-785-5220.

Otto’s the name, and making you smile is his game. This 6-month-old pup is always on the go! This energetic furball is a true paw-fessional at making friends, both on two legs and four. Otto’s motto is simple: “why walk when you can run, why whisper when you can bark, and why fit in when you were born to stand out?” He’s not just a pet; he’s a paw-some companion ready to bring joy and laughter into your life. He’s got a nose for adventure and a heart full of love.

Whether he’s chasing his tail or your affection, he does it with a wag in his step. Otto’s ready to jump right into your life and fill it with laughter and licks. He’s not just man’s best friend—he’s everyone’s best friend!

Are you looking for a big mush? The kind of cat that follows you from room to room, sits on your lap or sleeps next to you. Then Henri is for you! He is a boy who craves human attention and affection. He is athletic and enjoys toys of all kinds and having access to a good cat scratcher. He adapted beautifully in his foster’s home.

Henri is highly allergic to mites of all kinds and certain proteins. He is now being maintained on a limited protein diet and cyclosporine that he takes easily. Henri would do best in a home where he is the only cat. He is waiting patiently to find a furever home and a person of his own.

Maximus is clearly one strikingly handsome fella. This medium haired boy just turned five in February. Maximus is fairly new to the shelter. He was loved from the moment he was found outside as a stray kitten. Sadly, his family fell upon hard times and could no longer give him the life he deserves. While Maximus is adjusting and still heartbroken, it may take him a little time to warm up. Earning his trust is worth its weight in gold…as he will shower you with endless purring, adoration and unconditional love. Maximus has already proven to be a beloved companion and deserves another chance to find his person. Maximus would do best in a quiet home, with older children and possibly other pets.

If you are interested in meeting Maximus, please fill out an application here: https://www.townofsmithtownanimalshelter.com/applications or call the shelter at 631-360-7575 for more information.

If you’ve had cats before, you’ll recognize how time and patience can help them adjust.  A home with older children would help make them feel welcome and secure.

To cat or not to cat? That is the question! William Shakespaw has a tale to share with the lucky family who becomes his future audience. This highly entertaining nine-month-old kitty was locally rescued and, despite some heart issues, has become the Bard of Bianca’s Furry Friends, scooting into the arms of his visitors, never turning down a good long nuzzle. William will need an echocardiogram in the spring and possibly a balloon valvuloplasty to improve his heart health. He’s looking for a foster home that he hopes will become his purrament one.

Adoption

*Senior Alert* Right here, right now, 13-year-old Fatboy Slim is preparing to embark on a brand-new beginning. He’s ready to put an end to the sadness he’s endured after losing his owner. After discovering a visual impairment our vets got to work improving this delicate boy’s health. Through all the changes one thing has remained constant: his ability to give and receive, making him a sweet companion to your home. If you’re looking to make your home a safe place for someone special to land, look further than Fatboy Slim.

Adoption Jesse Owens

11-month-old Jesse Owens is a little cathlete who’s jumping through hurdles to find his way to the finish line—a real home to call his own. Jesse likes to run solo so being the only pet in the home would be ideal for her. A family with cat-experience and older children prepared to give him plenty of playtime and cuddles will him go the distance.

Adoption

After raising her kittens as the queen of the nursery and a long stretch in a home, four-year-old Lucy Liu came back to us. She’s ready for that special someone who’ll be committed to letting her be an unencumbered lady of leisure. Spoiling Lucy Liu with attention and playtime will give her plenty of time to unwind. A home with older children would be ideal for her purrsonality!
