The Great Neck Public Schools will host a memorial event on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, to celebrate the life and legacy of former GNPS Superintendent Dr. Teresa Prendergast. The event, which will include the naming of a baseball field in Dr. Prendergast’s honor, will begin at 4 p.m. at the baseball field on the South High School campus, 341 Lakeville Rd. In case of inclement weather, a rain date has been set for Monday, June 3.

The program will begin with a dedication ceremony at the baseball field, where district representatives will unveil a memorial in Dr. Prendergast’s honor. Following the ceremony, GNPS employees from across the District will take the field in a friendly three-inning exhibition softball game—North versus South—to officially christen Prendergast Memorial Field.

Dr. Prendergast joined the Great Neck Public Schools as Superintendent in 2015 and faithfully served the school community for eight years, always putting the needs of Great Neck students and staff first. Dr. Prendergast tragically passed away on June 10, 2023.

An educator since 1987, Dr. Prendergast touched countless lives across several school districts as a classroom teacher, dean of students, assistant principal, building principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. Dr. Prendergast is remembered as a compassionate leader who led with grace and dignity.

An avid New York Mets fan, Dr. Prendergast enjoyed attending Mets baseball games—home and away—with family and friends. The dedication of Prendergast Memorial Field is a nod to her enthusiasm for baseball and her unwavering support for students.

The public is invited to attend this memorial event. Individuals who plan to attend are asked to RSVP using an online form (bit.ly/PrendergastMemorialGNPS) and provide an email address for notification if the event is moved to the rain date. For additional information, contact the GNPS Superintendent’s Office at 516-441-4001.
