Manhasset High School theatre students, senior Helen Murphy and sophomore Jack Chambers have been selected to move on to the semifinal round of the prestigious Roger Rees Awards, placing them in the top 50 of all high school theatre students in New York State.
The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance sets out to recognize distinction in student performance and outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre programs across the New York City area. The program was formerly known as The Gershwin Awards, sponsored by The Broadway Education Alliance.
Murphy and Chambers went through a master class and audition with 140 other students in the last round, making it into the top 50. The competition will now be narrowed down to 12 and Director of Fine and Performing Arts Dr. Joseph Owens noted that he could not be more proud of his students.
“Helen and Jack making it this far is a testament to the support and the skill level of our school’s theatre program at large,” said Dr. Owens. “What we do here, we do it well, and these kids are at the top of everything they do.”
