The Wheatley School students recently participated in the prestigious New York State School Music Association’s Majors Festival at Adelphi University. Members of the Concert Orchestra and Honors String Ensemble performed a challenging repertoire selected from the NYSSMA manual and adjudicated on several criteria.
Following their performance, the Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Stan Orlovsky, received a Silver Medal, and the Honors String Ensemble, under the direction of John Watts, received the highest honor – the Gold with Distinction for the third consecutive year.
The annual music event is intended to benefit the student musicians and provide them with performance and adjudication opportunities. The experience helps strengthen the district’s music program, fosters teamwork, provides performance opportunities to students, and challenges them to work together to reach higher levels in music.
“We are so proud of our music students, their hard work and dedication to their craft, and congratulate them on their achievements this year,” music teacher John D’Onofrio-Watts said.
