The Rodgers and Hammerstein Era
2 p.m. From 1943 to 1959, the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II changed the structure of musical theatre. Music and dance became fully integrated into the plot and propelled the story to its conclusion. Beginning with Oklahoma! In 1943, Rodgers and Hammerstein not only brought a fresh model to the musical comedy format and successfully incorporated dance into the fabric of the show, but also captured an idealized American image. Their model proved to be versatile, and allowed them to explore topics that were not the usual fare for the Broadway musical-going public. Their shows are still part of the core repertoire of musicals and remain audience favorites. Join presenter Marc Courtade to explore the rich history of the team that redefined musical theatre. Hear interesting tidbits about patriots such as Washington, Hamilton, Grant, and Father Duffy, as well as others who came through Ellis Island to contribute to this country. 7 p.m. Whether you use social media, shop online, or access your bank information digitally, we’re all vulnerable to cyber attacks. In a presentation led by Ali Haider of the Center for Cyber Safety & Education, discover how to present unauthorized access to your devices, the latest cyber scams, including “deep fakes” from AI, identifying malware, ransomware, phishing schemes, what to do if you’re hacked or cloned on social media, preventing identity theft, and so much more. This is an in-person program taking place at the Hicksville Public Library, 169 Jerusalem Ave. Open to all. Registration required.

Tap Dance for Beginners
Wednesdays, July 10 – August 17. Have you always wanted to learn how to tap dance? Now’s your chance! Join tap dance instructor Louise Rastu (of the Red Hot Mamas fame) as she teaches us how to tap dance our way to health and happiness! In this 6-week course (no experience needed), we will warm up, work on weight changes and balance, learn basic tap steps and language, and finish with a combination. Tap dancing works out your whole body, so it’s one of the best forms of exercise! Registration required. Register once for the 6-week series. No tap shoes? You can rent a pair of tap shoes for the entire 6-week class for $5.00. Just let us know your shoe size (not sneaker size) when you register.
