Nearly 500 participants gathered Sunday for Sid Jacobson JCC’s annual Stronger Than Cancer 5K Run, Walk, and Family Fun Day, raising close to $300,000 in support of our Nancy Marx Cancer Wellness Center.
The funds raised will ensure that the Center can continue providing essential services free of charge to individuals and families affected by cancer across Long Island and the greater New York City metropolitan area. Services include individual and family counseling, support groups, wellness programs such as yoga and fitness, and a wide range of resources to assist survivors and caregivers as they navigate the challenges of cancer.
The event saw a diverse group of runners, walkers, families, and community members come together to support those impacted by cancer. From the starting line to the finish, participants were met with cheers, followed by the first-ever after-party featuring live entertainment and refreshments provided by local food vendors, creating an atmosphere of celebration and unity.
This year, Sid Jacobson JCC honored Susan Stein, a social worker at NMCWC, for her exceptional dedication and the positive impact she has had on the lives of so many individuals touched by cancer.
Upon receiving the honor, Stein expressed her gratitude.
“It is deeply humbling to be this year’s honoree,” she said. “My time at our Nancy Marx Cancer Wellness Center has revealed the true strength of compassion in supporting those affected by cancer. Being able to stand by their side throughout their journey is a profound privilege, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to make a difference.”
Randy Hight, Director of our Nancy Marx Cancer Wellness Center, also spoke about the significance of recognizing Susan, noting, “Her unwavering commitment to NMCWC has transformed the lives of countless individuals impacted by cancer and their caregivers. Her compassion and dedication shine brightly here at Sid Jacobson JCC.”
Additionally, Sid Jacobson JCC’s Wellness Center Advisory Board was presented with the Community Service Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions. The Advisory Board plays a crucial role in fundraising, advocacy, and raising awareness of the services the Center provides. Their efforts ensure that every person navigating the challenges of cancer has access to the necessary resources and a supportive network.
Harvey C. Marx, Survivor Sponsor and Co-Chair Emeritus of the Stronger Than Cancer 5K, reflected on the day’s personal significance.
“Each year, I walk in memory of my wife, Nancy, and am reminded of the vital role our Cancer Wellness Center plays for those affected by cancer in her name,” he said. “The Stronger Than Cancer 5K allows me to honor her legacy and ensure that the Center can keep offering its invaluable, free services to our community.”
“The Stronger Than Cancer 5K is not just a race—it’s a movement of resilience and courage,” Hight continued. “By coming together, we’re fueling the programs that support cancer survivors and their families, making sure they know they never have to face this journey alone.”
