Soccer Tournament

Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf will host the 31st annual Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association Northern Regional Soccer Tournament on Oct. 2 and 3 at the Mitchel Athletic Complex, 1 Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Uniondale. The Mill Neck Manor Chiefs, Western Pennsylvania Lions, Rochester Wildcats, Scranton Bears and St. Mary’s Bisons will compete in this year’s free indoor tournament. While the Mill Neck Manor Chiefs have participated for three years in the tournament, this year marks the first that Mill Neck will host. Coming in second place last year in Rochester was a highlight of the season and has motivated the team to work towards a first place win this year. The tournament schedule is as follows: 3 to 8 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.

Designer Showcase Preview Party

The Mentoring Partnership of L.I., beneficiary of this year’s Designers’ Showcase, will host a preview cocktail party on Oct. 2 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the historic villa La Selva, Oyster Bay Rd., Upper Brookville. La Selva is also the site of the Showcase itself, which will open the following day on Oct. 3 and will welcome guests through Nov. 15. Proceeds from both the preview party and showcase will impact directly hundreds of mentoring programs and thousands of young people on Long Island. Tickets for the not-to-be missed gala on Oct. 2 may be purchased by contacting Mary Beth Guyther at 631-761-7800 or by visiting the Mentoring Partnership website at www.mentorkids.org.

Classic Ghost Stories

Greg Oliver Bodine performs his new solo, a Halloween tour-de-force, Dark Surroundings, a double-bill of short, one-man plays adapted from two classic ghost stories, The Screaming Skull and The Upper Berth by American author F. Marion Crawford. To tales of maritime mystery and horror. The performance will be held at the Matinecock Masonic Historical Society, 14 W. Main St., at 7:30 p.m. One performance only. Tickets are a suggested donation of $10 at the door. No reservations accepted. Seating is limited. The box office opens at 6:30 p.m. Call 922-3897.

Designers’ Showcase ‘09

Mansions & Millionaires announces the Designers’ Showcase ’09 at historic La Selva mansion, 187 Oyster Bay Rd., Mill Neck. Built in 1915, by Hunt & Hunt, with grounds by the legendary Olmstead Bros., La Selva represents the unusual in the Italianate Mediterranean Style. The interior is brimming with details depicting many of the world’s masters in their field, columns carved with gargoyles and critters; iron work, vaulted ceiling, marble floors, a stone staircase that seems to float to the second floor, Renaissance paintings built into the walls, etc. On the exterior find, garden sculpture and artifacts, some from the 1st Century AD. This is an estate of many surprises. Oct. 3 through Nov. 15 – Tuesday through Friday 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday and Columbus Day 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays except Columbus Day.

Muttontown Hike

Muttontown Preserve will host a guided hike entitled “Fall Wildflowers. An experienced guide will provide spectacular views of the main field, which offers the color of fall flowers. Enrollment for the hike ($5) is limited and preregistration is required by calling 571-8500 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hike will begin at the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve, Muttontown Ln., south of 25A, East Norwich.

Golf Classic

Tee off for charity. The Auxiliary of North Shore University Hospital will hold its 31st Annual Golf Classic at The Creek in Locust Valley. Proceeds from the event will benefit NSUH’s Cardiac Center. Sponsorship opportunities are available for individuals and corporations. Sponsorship includes green fees, cart, caddies, a buffet breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by shotgun at 9 a.m., luncheon and awards. The event will be held rain or shine. Trees for Life

Trees for the Life of Long Island is the title of a relevant symposium, free and open to the public, to be held in Grace Auditorium at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory at 10 a.m. Four Long Island Garden Clubs, all members of The Garden Club of America – a nationwide organization concerned with environmental and horticultural issues – will hold the symposium. Speakers will include David Foster, Bill Toomey, Ed Faison, Bill Labich and Kathleen Kitka.

President’s Cup Golf Tournament

The Boys & Girls Club of OB-EN will hold its annual 2009 President’s Cup Golf Tournament at the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove. An exciting day of competition, games and prizes is being planned, including a 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class for the Hole-in-One winner. This annual fundraising event benefits the youngsters of the OB-EN community. The full day of events begins at 9:30 a.m. with registration, a breakfast buffet, time on the practice range and tee off at 11 a.m. The day ends with cocktails and a buffet dinner, during which awards will be presented. Participants can also take part in the putting contest as well as a sports trivia contest. Also the Big Blue Raffle consisting of tickets which can be purchased prior to the event by contacting the Boys & Girls Club, or at the actual event. The price is $75 which entitles the purchaser to 75 entries into the raffle, or three Big Blue Raffle tickets for $200. Sponsorship opportunities are available for both players and non-players. The cost for a single golfer is $395 and reservations can be made for only the cocktail party and buffet dinner for $150. NC Legislative Candidates Forum

The League of Women Voters of East Nassau is a non-partisan advocacy organization committed to the goal of providing timely, objective, important information to the community so that the voter can take an active part in grassroots community affairs. At 7:30 p.m., the LWV is holding a NC Legislative Candidates Forum at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, 999 Old Country Rd., Plainview. The following candidates have been invited to participate: 14LD: David Mejias (D,I,WF), Joseph Belesi (R,C). Bayville Book Event

The annual Bayville beautification “Evening on the Beach” will be held at the Crescent Club at 7 p.m. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the just released Bayville pictorial Images of America Bayville. The book may be purchased that evening and thereafter at Village Hall, Bayville Museum, the Green Market and at Borders. The fun evening will provide the opportunity to purchase raffles, enjoy a sumptuous buffet, meet and chat with friends and view a spectacular sunset. Tickets are available at Village Hall, the Green Market and from members of the Beautification Committee. Tickets are available at $40 per person.
