On a sunny and breezy autumn day, Oyster Bay High School students, area residents and volunteers participated in the third annual swim in Oyster Bay Cove to raise funds and awareness for North Shore University Hospital’s Brain Aneurysm Center, part of the Harvey Cushing Institutes for Neuroscience.
Sponsored by the Long Island Volunteer Center, the event’s amateur athletes supported their friend and fellow swimmer, Joan Imhof, of Bayville, who suffered a ruptured aneurysm three years ago and was treated at the Brain Aneurysm Center. Swimmers, guided by safety boats, opted for either a half-mile or one-mile swim in the choppy waters of Long Island Sound in mid-September, which coincides with Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month.
Swimmer Mandy Hundling (second from right in wet suit) summed up her reason for taking part in the event: “I wanted to show support for Joan…it’s easy to give money but when you swim you give a little bit of yourself…we could all have the same issue some day.”
Frank M. Flower & Sons, Inc. partner David Relyea and his wife Eileen took part in the benefit swim.
