One day after a 14-year-old boy was killed while riding his bicycle in Farmingdale, 8th Squad detectives found out his identity.
According to police, Bryan Enriquez of Farmingdale was riding his blue bicycle across Route 109 at the intersection of Staples Street when he was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound.
Enriquez was transported to New Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. Detectives reported no criminality on the part of the driver and no summonses issued.
A freshman at Farmingdale High School, Enriquez was a member of the marching band and pep band. Farmingdale High School Principal Glen Zakian offered condolences to Enriquez’ friends and family on behalf of the district.
“Bryan was a gifted and loving young man whose positive personality made an impact on everyone he interacted with,” he added. “He was a true Daler who played an integral role in creating school spirit and enthusiasm at Farmingdale High School. Bryan was a very talented young man, and will be missed by everyone.”
Zakian added that grief counselors would be available to all students and staff in the coming weeks.
Over the years, several pedestrians and bicyclists have been killed or seriously injured while crossing Route 109 in Farmingdale.
“Since I have been in office we have reached out to New York State Department of Transportation for traffic calming measures,” Mayor George “Butch” Starkie said. “That’s four years of unacceptable delays.”
