On a picture perfect day, the Mineola Mustang Run, conceived by Lynn Fairgrieve and with the help of her hard-working crew, ended last Sunday after 25 successful years. The feeling by all, and there were several hundred, at the run was one of sadness and nostalgia.
Many of the runners had been at the very first run 25 years ago and they could not help but reminisce back to all of the runs; the diversity in the weather and the many obstacles they all had to overcome.
Race director Lynn Fairgrieve said that she was very sad to see the race end, but, she said, “It’s time.”
Many officials were on hand to start the race. New York State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel started the Fun Run and New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli blew the horn to start the 5-mile run.
A young woman from Mineola High School sang The Star Spangled Banner to start the fun run and Reverend Myers did the honors for the 5-mile run.
All in all it was a most successful day for the Run, but one that was overshadowed by the realization that the run was ending.
