Recently, the Bellerose-Floral Park chapter of Homemakers Council of Nassau County (HCNC) presented 100 surgery dolls to Winthrop Hospital. This community service project was started about 25 years ago, totaling more than 5,000 dolls over this span of time. The Child Life and Pediatrics staff use these dolls to explain medical procedures to children or the children use dolls for autographs. In addition to the surgery dolls, the chapter also donates many crocheted and knitted baby hats for the preemies, quilts, blankets and bibs throughout the 25 years.
The chapter also supports veterans with various projects. They donate white cotton socks, fleece blankets, knitted/crocheted lap robes, hats and gloves to many different hospitals in Long Island. Two of the organizations they support are Wounded Warriors and the American Legion.
Homemakers meet every Wednesday at 10 a.m. for classes. Monthly meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month at noon, followed with a guest speaker. They meet at Christ Lutheran Church on Spooner St. and Plainfield Ave. in Floral Park. For more information, call Gerry DeLeo, Chapter President, at 488-2106. Bellerose-Floral Park chapter is one of 18 chapters in Nassau County. Their goals are friendship, education and community service. New members are always welcome to join.
