Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde
Presented by the Nassau Community College Department of Theatre and Dance through Nov. 14. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Written by Moises Kaufman, the play chronicles the artist’s incendiary real-world trial for “gross indecency” that captured the attention of Victorian society. Wilde, considered the greatest playwright and humorist of 19th-century London, faced three court trials stemming from a relationship with the handsome and much younger Lord Alfred Douglas. Ultimately, Wilde is convicted of and imprisoned. Drawing from real-life trial transcripts and Wilde’s words, the play looks at the eternal battle between art and morality while emphasizing the way that the powers-that-be try to exercise control over people’s private lives. Tickets $9; seniors aged 55 and over $7; college students with a fall 2010 ID are free. Call 572-7676.
