Free Nature Tours
Enjoy a guided nature walk on the trails throughout the year on the first and third Saturday of every month at the Hoffman Center Nature Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, 6000 Northern Blvd., Muttontown (between Route 106 and 107 – just west of Martin Viette Nursery). Meet the guide at the site entrance at 12:50 p.m. Gate locked when tour begins. No pets, no children under 10 years of age or organized groups permitted. Rain or shine. No registration required. Model Railroading Museum
Will be hosting its annual operating show on Feb. 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marcus Christ Hall, 1420 Jericho Tpke., New Hyde Park (corner of Jericho Tpke. and New Hyde Park Rd.). It will consist of operating railroads in HO and N scale, an interactive classic Lionel O scale, operating live steam locomotives in G scale and other exhibits. Admission is free; donations to the museum are appreciated. The building is handicapped accessible. Call 775-6362.
President’s Day Celebration
Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in partnership with the Friends of Sagamore Hill and Eastern National will host Edmund Morris, best-selling author of the Theodore Roosevelt trilogy at Christ Church Parish Hall in Oyster Bay at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Morris will discuss and read from his latest book Colonel Roosevelt and host a question and answer session. He will sign his book following the discussion. Copies of Colonel Roosevelt will be available for purchase. At the conclusion of the event, complimentary snacks and light refreshments will be available courtesy of the Friends of Sagamore Hill. Portledge School Winter Wonders Family Day
Children (in Kindergarten through fifth grade) and their parents are invited to a free, hands-on Winter Wonders nature walk and activities program. Led by beloved science teacher, Evie Sarles, the morning will be filled with winter-themed storytelling, a nature walk (weather permitting) where children will explore animals in winter, animal tracks and build a mini shelter, and have a healthy snack. Camellia Weekend
Planting Fields celebrates its rare collection of 200 colorful winter flowering camellia trees the weekend of Feb. 26 and 27, each day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Camellia Greenhouse. The gorgeous red, white and pink blooms are an extraordinary winter feast for the eyes. Entrance to the park and to the Camellia House is free to all. The mansion at Coe Hall will be open ($5 per person; members and children under 12 free). 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Continuous activities include the Mad Hatters Tea Party, hosted by the Mad Hatter himself. Tea is made from leaves of the camellia tree, hence the all day, both days, Tea Party, especially for children and families. Coe Hall activities include refreshments, children’s crafts and caricaturist. Lecture at 2 p.m. in the Great Hall, Charles Cresson, camellia expert and horticultural lecturer, “Growing Hardy Camellias.” Call 922-8682.
Chamber Players International
Planting Fields Series will present the second concerts of the season, celebrating the arboretum’s Camellia Gardens with great chamber music on Feb. 26 and 27 from noon and 3 p.m. each day at the garden’s greenhouses on the grounds of Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, 1395 Planting Fields Rd., Oyster Bay. The program will consist of a variety of classic flute duets, performed by the renowned Sally Shorrock and guest flutists each day.

Art Walk First Thursday
Art Walk features an international spectrum of contemporary artists. Get some artistic inspiration as you visit local art galleries. Other businesses and sites in town will be displaying artwork. Local restaurants will be exhibiting art and are offering a percentage off on meals, wine tastings and more. Live music entertainment is scheduled. Cafes and restaurants will remain open late for dessert and coffee. The evening will begin with Chase Edwards Gallery, 15 E. Main St. (802-0655) and continues at Atelier Gallery, 9 E. Main St.; Art (that matters), 55 W. Main St. (917-769-9921); The Teaching Studios of Oyster Bay, 115 Audrey Ave. (971-597-2404); and The Artist Club Gallery, 29 Berry Hill Rd. will also be open. Art will also be available for viewing at various downtown merchants, including Canterbury Ales, Jack Halyards and Wild Honey. The Oyster Bay Main Street Association office (17 Audrey Ave.) will also be displaying the works of local artists, with refreshments served. The Mill Neck Family of Organizations announces the second “Blue Jean Ball – Texas Style!,” a fresh western spin on the regular Casino Royale, to be held on March 5 at the North Hills Country Club in Manhasset from 6:30 to 11:30 pm. Dress in your best jeans and jewels and enjoy Tex Mex cuisine, a Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament, a shooting gallery, a rodeo roper, horseshoes, live music, line dancing, best-dressed cowboy couple awards, cocktails, a 50/50 drawing and chances to win fabulous prizes.
