Benefit Run for the Brooke Jackman Foundation to Support Literacy
The Brooke Jackman Race for Literacy brought out a great crowd in Oyster Bay on Saturday, May 14. Proceeds of the run go to benefit and support youth literacy, supply books and build libraries for underprivileged children in the greater New York area.
This year the run was won by 23-year-old hometown Oyster Bay speedster, Austin Huminski, who turned in a 17:40 finish for the 3.107 mile course from the Roosevelt Elementary School up to Planting Fields and back. He lead with an 11 second margin over runner-up Steve Tortora of Brentwood. Oyster Bay youngsters Nick Mavros and Justin Nakrin scored third and fourth overall.
In the Women’s Division, 30 year Shari Klarfeld of Plainview repeated as the winner, with Oyster Bay’s Tracy Kemper scoring second place, also for the second straight year.
There were 173 finishers overall who enjoyed the event this year.
State Senator Carl Marcellino was once again on hand to salute the Jackman family and honor the memory of their beloved daughter Brooke whose life ended on 9/11 but whose legacy lives on.
Long Island’s own WBAB was there playing everyone’s favorite music. Dozens of prizes were awarded to winners in all age categories, and each participant received a commemorative T-shirt and water bottle to remember the event.
