Beethoven Festival

Presented by Chamber Players International as part of their Great Performers series on Sept. 17 and 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Coe Hall, Planting Fields Arboretum, 1395 Planting Fields Rd., Oyster Bay. The Sept. 17 program will consist of Beethoven’s Sonata, Op. 69 for cello and piano in A Major and Trio, Op. 1 No. 1 in Eb Major. Performers will be pianist Sean Chen, violinist Kristin Lee and cellist Andrew Janss. The Sept. 18 concert will feature the Pathetique and Kreutzer Sonatas for violin and piano, performed by violinist Bela Horvath and pianist Konstantin Soukhevetski. Tickets are $15 each day. Free Nature Tours

Enjoy a guided nature walk on the trails throughout the year on the first and third Saturday of every month at the Hoffman Center Nature Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, 6000 Northern Blvd., Muttontown (between Route 106 and 107 – just west of Martin Viette Nursery). Meet the guide at the site entrance at 12:50 p.m. Gate locked when tour begins. No pets, no children under 10 years of age or organized groups permitted. Rain or shine. No registration required. St John’s Fair

The 59th Annual St John’s of Lattingtown Fall Fair will be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will have the theme Pirates of the Caribbean. Fair Chairperson Victoria Crosby encourages all who wish to dress in costume and get in the spirit of finding your treasure at St John’s Fair. In addition to the traditional booths there will be special entertainment from, Ye Pyrate Brotherhood, who dress in authentic reproduction costumes of the pirate era, and will entertain with stories and songs. The fair officially opens at 10 a.m., but for those who wish to get a first look at available treasures, there is a special preview at 9:15 a.m. The Gordon Highlanders will perform a bagpipe parade at 11 a.m. Food will be available all day, with bagels, baked goods and coffee from the Breakfast Cafe in the morning, and hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled corn at The Grill from noon onwards. There will also be cotton candy and popcorn, games, bouncy rides, face painting, antiques, jewelry, collectibles, plants, books, toys, sporting goods, electronics, furniture, clothing and much more for sale as well as a Silent Auction. $5 regular admission at 10 a.m.; $20 for the 9:15 a.m. preview and free for children under 12. Alison Hayes, The Rock Girl

The well-known psychic, medium, past life channeler, Reiki master, healer and master of stones, The Rock Girl, Allison Hayes, will join the Long Island Feng Shui Institute as a guest faculty member. On Sept. 18 Hayes will present her extremely popular one day workshop entitled “Introduction to Rocks.” The workshop will teach participants how to balance their mind, body and spirit with the frequency of stones. It will also cover who rocks are, where they come from, how to speak their language and how to hear what they say. Each person will develop his/her own technique of “working” with a stone. As Hayes will explain, “each person has his/her own unique way of connecting with a stone and there is no “one size fits all stone.” As each person is unique, so is each stone.” The LI Feng Shui Institute is located in Planting Fields Arboretum, State Historic Park.

Life Jazz in the Café

At The Life Enrichment Center at Oyster Bay. Trés Cabaret is back. Come for the second “Supper & Song” evening featuring jazz saxophonist Paul Kendall. 50-Mile Relay Charitable Challenge

Bethpage Federal Credit Union partners with The Greater LI Running Club to sponsor the Bethpage Ocean to Sound 50-Mile Relay and Charitable Challenge to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The route will extend from Jones Beach State Park – Field 2, up to Cedar Creek Park, and then through Seaford, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset and Oyster Bay Cove. The race will finish at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. Each team will consist of eight runners. Team members will take turns running one section of the eight-leg relay. Each leg is between five and seven miles. Each participant will be given a commemorative T-shirt and an invitation to the post-race party taking place at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park. The post-race party will include unlimited food and beverages, live music and an awards ceremony. Team categories include Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Mixed Open, Men’s Masters, Women’s Masters, Mixed Masters, Men’s Senior Masters, Women’s Senior Masters, Corporate, Law Enforcement/Firefighter, Physically Challenged, and One Person Teams. 8 a.m. start time. (7 a.m. early start time available for teams anticipating the need for more than 8 hours to complete the 50 miles). Teams must register online at www.glirc.org. Cost: $360/team if registered by Sept. 18. $400/team if registered between Sept. 19 and 24. No day-of-race entries will be accepted.

The Brookhaven Kennel Club hosts its 42nd All-Breed Dog Show, Obedience and Rally Trial with special attraction of Best Puppy in Show, guided dogs show tour, education, vendors, food. There & Back: A Celebration

The No Surrender Breast Cancer Foundation announced that Elizabeth Roosevelt is the co-honoree along with Dr. Ron Israeli at the “There & Back: A Celebration of Survival” Gala at 7 p.m. at Christ Church, 55 E. Main St. A lifelong Oyster Bay resident, art historian, avid sailor and wonderful photographer, Ms. Roosevelt will represent the Roosevelt family and present the Alice Roosevelt Longworth Award, (she was a breast cancer survivor) to Dr. Ron Israeli. Tickets are $100 each; $75 for those under the age of 29.

America’s Poets Walk With Walt

The program, which will be held at the birthplace of America’s Good Gray Poet at 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station, will be hosted by Whitman Birthplace Writer in Residence George Wallace. The program will pair a nationally prominent visiting writer with one of Long Island’s fine regional poets for a program of poetry and conversation. Call For Volunteers

The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work in food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival, to be held on Oct. 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers can work in shifts from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. Each Columbus Day weekend, thousands of families visit the Mill Neck Manor campus, located on the beautiful grounds of a Long Island Gold Coast Estate. The outdoor festival is commonly known as “Apple Sale.” The event features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a cheese house, deaf specialty items and more. Throughout the 50-year history of the festival, volunteer support from local civic and church groups, students, alumni, staff, parents and faithful supporters have made this a special and memorable event. The Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 1 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center. Open to all 2011 volunteers ages 16 and over, the event will feature a delicious continental breakfast, an orientation and a long-time volunteer recognition ceremony. OB Farmers Market

The market features over 15 vendors and offers goods as varied as homemade pickles to natural pet treats, will celebrate its grand opening. New hours this year are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The market will continue to operate every Friday through Oct. 28. Many vendors from the market’s inaugural year are eagerly returning to harvest the benefits of a bursting downtown. They will be joined by an impressive number of new exciting vendors wanting to be part of the weekly event. The market will now be situated on Audrey Ave., north of the Oyster Bay Bandstand, which will become a pedestrian thoroughfare on market days. The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is organizing and managing this enterprise in conjunction with the Town of Oyster Bay. Call 922-6982.

Muttontown Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

The Fellowship provides an atmosphere of warmth and comraderie, with talks presented by intelligent enlightening and non-dogmatic speakers who come from the entire spectrum of the Arts, History and Sciences. This is followed by coffee and an informal discussion circle, held in the turn-of-the-18th century farmhouse in a bucolic setting.
