A regular meeting of the board of trustees was held on Sept. 20, at 8 p.m.
Building Department
Trustee Rhatigan reported that during the month of August, the Building Department issued 11 building permits totaling an estimated $145,300 in construction costs. They also issued five plumbing permits, 12 electrical permits, three fence permits and 10 miscellaneous permits. The Architectural Review Board heard four new cases and revisited two old cases in August. There were no Zoning Board of Appeals cases heard in August. Two applications were submitted for a special use permit to be heard by the Board of Trustees. One is for a convenience store on the old Sizzler property and the other is a modification to antennas on the silo at Van Buren Avenue.
Department of Public Works
Trustee Longobardi reported that the last of the tree stumps and debris from Hurricane Irene have been cleared away. DPW continues to work on the concrete and street work required to repair damages caused by the hurricane. This coming week DPW will begin preventative maintenance projects to seal cracks in parking lots throughout our village. The new sanitation collection truck has gone through its initial testing and is now in full service. All of the HVAC improvements needed at the Atlantic Avenue Fire House have been completed and they are set for the coming winter and future summer seasons. Several buildings in the village have sections of their roofs leaking. DPW hopes to begin repair work to these roofs prior to the winter weather arriving. Finally, the re-striping of the double yellow lines in the streets will be completed shortly before the paint machine is put away for the winter.
Covert Avenue Chamber of Commerce
Trustee Longobardi reported that the Covert Avenue Street Fair held on Saturday, Sept.17 was a great success. The weather was perfect and the local merchants welcomed many families and happy young faces. Trustee Longobardi congratulated the Chamber for a job well done and thanked the Police Department and Department of Public Works for making this year’s fair an enjoyable time for everyone. Without their help before, during and after the fair, it certainly would not have gone as well as it did.
Citizens with Disabilities Committee
Trustee Longobardi said that with schools open, sports programs off and running, and the hectic schedules of everyday life back in full swing, the Citizens with Disabilities Committee would like to remind everyone that handicapped parking spaces are to be used only by those who hold a proper permit to do so. Not only is it illegal to park in one of these spaces without a proper permit, it is unfair to those who truly need the use of the specially marked spaces.
Mayor’s Report
Mayor Tweedy said that a very important event will be taking place on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 11 a.m. on the Village Hall lawn; the dedication of the 9/11 Relic Steel Memorial.
On motion by Trustee Longobardi, seconded by Trustee Rhatigan, and carried unanimously, Mayor Tweedy recessed the meeting at 8:10 p.m.
