William H. Spettmann, of Hicksville, passed away on April 25, 2012.
He is reunited with his beloved wife Gloria who preceded him in death. He is survived by his son William H. Jr. (Patricia); daughters, Gail Castoro (Carl), Allison Rozario (Dennis); 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who knew him as “Opa.”
Bill was a graduate of New York Military Academy’s Class of 1950. He went on to become member of the U.S. Merchant Marine and veteran of the United States Army. After discharge he became a Local Union 580 ironworker who was instrumental in establishing an annuity fund, scholarship, and apprenticeship program, for which he was a welding instructor.
Whether as member of the committee that established the Hicksville High School adult education program or cutting the grass in the West John Street median, he was active in civic matters during his 60 years in Hicksville. He was a lifelong conversationalist and devoted fisherman who could frequently be found at the beach. Services are private.
