Will vie for seat occupied by Frank Miranda
(The following was submitted to the Illustrated News by school board candidate Helen Lewandowski)
Helen Lewandowski, known to her friends and community neighbors as Lynn, is running for a seat on the New Hyde Park/Garden City Park Board of Education.
She strongly believes that everyone in the community must step up, get involved with their ideas, energy and expectation and is committed to helping the children become lifelong learners fostering their academic, social and emotional skills to become contributory members in a diverse society.
Lewandowski, with her husband Lou, have two grown sons. They have lived in New Hyde Park since 1978 and have been actively involved in the community. Her sons attended Hillside Grade School and New Hyde Park Memorial High school.
Lewandowski has worked 20 years in the public and private education system. She started working in the New Hyde Park District in 1991. Her career began as a lunchroom aide and substitute secretary and then for approximately five years was a computer aide/secretary to the director of pupil personnel services.
She took on the additional responsibility of working as a substitute secretary in the superintendent’s office. Previously, she worked in the Great Neck School District as a secretary to the assistant superintendent of special education for approximately four years.
From 2004-2006, she worked as a secretary to the principal of the New Hyde Park Road School. Currently, Lynn works as a teacher’s aide at the New Hyde Park Road School.
Her passion has always been caring for people and when not in school, she provides private health care to the sick, elderly and hospice patients.
Lewandowski feels her school experience, especially working in the district, could bring a welcome perspective. She also feels she has the ability to be an effective communicator, make fiscally responsible decisions, while consciously being aware of employee needs and community expectations.
It is Lynn’s hope to create a friendly atmosphere that is sensitive to the needs of all community and staff members. Her contention is that in this ever changing environment, we should continue to make New Hyde Park the place where people want to live, learn and work together.
