The Winter Varsity Sports Season is in full swing. Many young athletes have distinguished themselves.
Winter Track Coach Chris Weber is excited about the achievement of OBHS Senior Kyle Cartwright.
“This is Kyle Cartwright’s first year running winter track, and he has already emerged as one of the county’s most dominant runners,” said Weber. “He is one of the county’s best 55-meter high hurdlers, which is possibly the most difficult event in high school sports. Kyle is also one of the best in the county as a 400-meter runner where he will possibly run sub 50 in the event this year. As part of the school’s 4×400 meter relay, Kyle has won gold medals at the Nassau Coaches Holidays Relays held at the historic 168th Street Armory and the Long Beach Hot Chocolate Relays. His incredible versatility as a runner was on display when he placed 3rd in the 600 meter run at the Walt Brem Track and Field Series. Kyle is a dedicated runner, committed to his teammates, and is a brilliant student; he plans on studying engineering next year after graduation.”
No stranger to athletic accolades, Caroline Kelly has been an excellent leader this year for the Lady Baymen basketball team.
Coach Lauren Tartamella said, “Caroline is a tough competitor. She is relentless on defense and makes big plays when needed. As a point guard Caroline averages 10 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists per game. Caroline has a strong work ethic and always gives one hundred percent. She is dedicated to trying to improve her game while being a positive role model for her teammates.”
Nick LaRosa is a senior and four year starter on the foil team. OBHS Varsity Fencing Coach John Bruckner added, “Nick is in his second year as the foil captain and has proven himself to be the leader of the entire team with the respect of all his fellow team-mates as well as his opponents. The previous two years as a sophomore and a junior, Nick was All-County being ranked #5 and #3 respectively in the county. Halfway through this season his current record is 17 and zero.”
Varsity Bowling Coach Tim Brady has an outstanding bowler on the team. “Cooper Lublin is a junior and has been a varsity bowler since the 8th grade,” Brady said. “Cooper competes in leagues and tournaments all year long and currently has a 195 league average with multiple 200 games and high scores of 254, 245, 240, 238, and 226 this season. Cooper is a two-time team captain and an All-Conference bowler from seasons past. He has also bowled a high three game series of 690 this season. Cooper is the anchor for the Boy’s Varsity Team that is currently challenging for 3rd place in a very competitive Nassau County Conference.”
Oyster Bay Wrestling Coach Doug Axman added his commentary.
“The Oyster Bay Wrestling Team just completed the first part of the season wrestling in four Holiday Tournaments,” he said. “The Baymen have been led by Alex Galizia who has won the Hank Paris Tournament and most recently the Locust Valley Tournament. Alex also placed in the Bethpage Holiday Tournament and the Glen Cove Tournament in which he was awarded the Oyster Bay MVP. Other wrestlers that have been tournament place winners this year are; Vincent Catala, Ian Estevez, James Mon and Cassidy Exum. The following Junior Varsity Wrestlers have also had their share of success with Mike Gettleman and Kevin Velesquez winning tournament championships along with place winners; Ryan Hauser and Andre Perez. The Baymen presently have a record of 2-2.”
And speaking of athletics, the Oyster Bay High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducting new members in the fall of 2013.
