9/11 Memorial Ceremony

Senator Carl Marcellino will hold a candle light vigil in commemoration of the 12th Anniversary of 9/11 on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. on the Western Waterfront on West End Avenue. The memorial is for Oyster Bay men and women lost in the collapse of the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

NFL Comes to Oyster Bay

 Rotary will be hosting an NFL Punt Pass Kick qualifying competition at East Woods School on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10:30 a.m. Punt Pass Kick is a youth sports initiative that allows boys and girls aged 6 – 16 to compete as part of the NFL’s Play 60 campaign. Ribbons will be award to the top three finishers in each category, and everyone will receive a certificate of excellence from the NFL. Winners will advance to the Long Island Championships, to be held at TR Park on Oct. 20 as part of the Oyster Festival. Winners of the LI Championship event will advance to the team finals at Met Life Stadium, and compete on the field as part of Jets pre-game event. Bluefish Tournament

The 28th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament, on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 4:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. includes hours of fishing followed by a tailgate party with hot dogs, beverages, snacks, raffles, awards and prizes. The tournament is limited to the first 350 boats (fee). Raffle winners must be present to receive their prizes, which will be presented at the tailgate party scheduled for 3 p.m. The record catch is 19.05 pounds. For information, call 797-4125.

Book Signing

A lecture and book signing by Salvatore J. LaGumina takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Oyster Bay Historical Society’s Koenig Center, 20 Summit Street.

As Italian immigrants and their descendants, moved to Long Island, they helped to build Long Island, whether as laborers or as contractors, such as the Castagnas. They brought their culinary traditions and opened markets, such as the still family-owned Iavarone Brothers Foods, and restaurants, including New Hyde Park’s Umberto’s. Join author Salvatore J. LaGumina to discover the remarkable contributions and vibrant culture of Italians and Italian Americans on Long Island. The lecture is free and open to the public. TRA Annual Meeting

The 94th annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association is being held on Sept. 19 to 22 in Buffalo, NY. The keynote speaker will be Pulitzer Prize winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin. She will be signing her latest book on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Though her book, The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism won’t be published until after the annual meeting, advance copies will be available for purchase, and Doris will sign book plates which attendees will be able to place in The Bully Pulpit once it arrives.

Arts Festival Weekend

The Oyster Bay – East Norwich Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the success of its Arts and Antique Walk held Sundays in July. “To finish off the season we are holding out first Oyster Bay Arts Festival on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22. There is a raindate the next weekend, Sept. 28 and 29,” said Treasurer Michele Browner.

An Evening Art Stroll

Visitors will stroll through Oyster Bay on Sept. 21 from 6 to 10 p.m. and soak in the treasures of a talented community of artists and collectors who will transform downtown sidewalks into an outdoor gallery.  The evening will also feature live music and an outdoor marketplace. Surrealist Women

The Friends of Locust Valley Library hosts a lecture on women artists who were surrealists on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. The speaker is Ines Powell, lecturer for The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Oyster Bay Main Street Association hosts its End of the Season Benefit Party at the newly reconstructed Creek Beach Club. Tickets are now $125 per person, but $150 per person after Sept. 15. Field Trip to Sleepy Hollow

The Post Library Association and the Oyster Bay Historical Society will lead a bus trip to visit Historic Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown on Thursday, Sept. 26. The tour bus leaves at 8:30 a.m. from the CW Post campus of LIU, 720 Northern Boulevard in Brookville, and returns at about 5 p.m. Please enter campus at the East Gate off Northern Boulevard and park in the first lot to the left. The cost is $95 per person for OBHS and PLA members ($115 for non-members). Transportation, lunch, tours, and light snacks enroute are all included. Tour highlights include Philipsburg Manor, the Old Dutch Church and Burying Ground, Union Church, and Sunnyside, with lunch at Bridge View Tavern. Centre Island Botanica

The Oyster Bay Historical Society welcomes author Deborah Munson Smith with a reception for her latest book, A Centre Island Botanica.  The reception and book signing will take place at the Society’s Angela Koenig Center, 20 Summit Street in Oyster Bay, from 4 to 6 pm on Sept. 27. The reception is free and open to the public, with light refreshments provided. Copies of A Centre Island Botanica will be available for purchase and signing.
