Caroline S. Peterssen, 100, formerly of Manhasset, died Saturday, May 3, 2014. She was the widow of Walter A. Peterssen, who died in 2000 and with whom she shared 63 years of marriage.
Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Caroline Kropp Sehlmeyer.
She lived in Mineola and then Manhasset for 30 years before moving to West Chester, PA.
At the age of 14 she was the sole support of her family during the depression. She also worked for Doubleday Publishing Company in Garden City.
Caroline was a former member of Church of Our Saviour Lutheran in Manhasset. She and her husband, Walter, were members of the North Hempstead Country Club and the Freeport Yacht Club.
Later as a homemaker, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting. The individual crocheted wreath pins she made traveled around the world with her wish for eternal life for the recipient.
Caroline is survived by two daughters, Carol A. Knueppel and husband Daniel of Chalfont, PA, Linda A. Werner and husband Carl of West Grove, PA; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Knueppel, Karen Stoner, Bradley Knueppel, Leslie Warner, Matthew Werner, Adam Werner, Joanna Smith, Rebecca Shallow; and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Herman C. Sehlmeyer.
Funeral services were held May 7 at Calvary Lutheran Church in West Chester, followed by interment in Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery there. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her name to Neighborhood Hospice, 795 E Marshall St., Ste. 204, West Chester, PA. 19380.
