The 2nd Annual Nassau Barkfest, Long Island’s Largest Pet Costume Contest and Parade, will take place Sunday, Oct. 19th from 12 – 3 p.m. at Eisenhower Park’s Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre. The event will be held rain or shine and all pets must be on a leash.
The free event is sponsored by the Nassau County SPCA and Long Island’s K98.3. The parade and costume judging begin at 1 p.m. With prizes being awarded for the following categories: Best Overall Pet Costume First, Second and Third Place; Most Unique Pet Costume 1st and 2nd Place; Cutest Pet Costume 1st and 2nd Place; Scariest Pet Costume 1st and 2nd Place; Funniest Pet Costume; Best Pet Couple Costume; Best Owner/Pet Costume Combo; and My Pet is Wearing that Next Year Costume.
The Nassau SPCA asks participants to bring a pet food donation box to help families with pets who are facing difficult financial times.
Many rescue groups and animal friendly organizations will be on site to celebrate. Anyone looking to add a four legged friend to their family should stop by as well as many rescue groups will have pets available for adoption. Those groups include: North Shore Animal League, FurBabies Rescue, The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, Last Hope, Bobbi and the Strays, Long Beach Humane Society, Ruff House Rescue, Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue, Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue, Bumper Bulldog Rescue and Pit of Our Souls Rescue.
