Floral Park Recreation Notes

The recreation department will once again participate in the nationwide “Great Backyard Bird Count” at Centennial Gardens on Friday, Feb. 13, from 3 to 4 p.m.. on Saturday, Feb. 14, from noon to 1 p.m. and again on Sunday, Feb. 15, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Counting birds is a fun, free and a family-friendly way to discover and help birds in the Floral Park community.

The “Great Backyard Bird Count” assists scientists at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society in the collection of data in order to study the bird population over a specific period of time. Through these observations and data scientists are able to research and define environmental changes.

Village residents are urged to participate whether at the gardens, at local park or in your own backyard. Stop by Centennial Gardens on the above dates to pick up logs and data forms. The department’s resident bird expert and field guide, Don Haug will be on hand to oversee and provide background information to bird viewers throughout this scientific data collecting endeavor.

The actual count may be submitted to Haug at the end of each session or dropped off Monday, Feb. 16 before 1 p.m. at the recreation pool building.

For information, interested villagers may call 516-326-6336 or visit the birdcount.org to learn more.
