Robert H. Furlong of Manhasset, NY died on Feb. 23, 2015. He was 91.
He was born on Aug. 2, 1923, in New York City to Julia (McMorrow) and Harry J. Furlong. Later he married Marilyn Drennen of Manhasset.
He was a decorated veteran of World War II having served as a P-47 fighter pilot in the 36th Fighter Group, 53rd Fighter Squadron, ninth Air Force, in the European Theater of Operations. He was awarded the DFC and six air medals. He was a graduate of Colgate University and later was the president of the Furlong and Lee Stone Company.
He was a lifelong aviation buff and an avid boater. He served as a past president of the P-47 Thunderbolt Pilots Association and was an active member of the American Legion. He served as a volunteer at St. Francis Hospital in Port Washington.
He is survived by his sister Mary McGuire, and his four children: Patricia McCarthy of Laurel, NY; Robert Furlong Jr. of Rockville Centre, NY; Anne Whalen of Rockville Centre, NY, and James Furlong of Baltimore, MD. He was predeceased by his wife Marilyn and his
brother Richard.
He also had 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family received visitors Feb. 27 at Fairchild and Sons Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held on Feb. 28 at St. Mary’s R.C. Church. He was interred in Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, NY
