The Friends of the Library (FOL) invites library patrons of all ages to Friends and Family Weekend, March 20 to 22, which will feature events such as a rockabilly concert, a paperback swap and lectures by scholars. All events are free and in the library’s Lapham meeting room.
The weekend kicks off on Friday, March 20, with a lunchtime lecture at 12:10 p.m., featuring horticultural author Thomas Christopher speaking about his book Essential Perennials. Christopher, a graduate of the New York Botanical Garden School of Professional Horticulture, is a former columnist for Horticulture, House & Garden, and Country Living Gardener.
At 7:30 p.m. on Friday, a concert will feature rockabilly crooners with the Robert Poe Band. The musical event is appropriate for adults and families with school-age children.
On Saturday, March 21, the paperback book swap returns, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Residents are urged to bring gently used adult, teen and children’s paperbacks for a free swap. This event typically draws hundreds of patrons sharing thousands of books.
Sunday, March 22, brings the “FOL University” lecture program at 1:30 p.m. Modeled as a one-day university, the event features lectures by two scholars on timely and fascinating topics. The speakers will be Harry Chotiner of the NYU School for Professional Studies, who will discuss the rise and fall of independent films, and Dr. Russell Powell, assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy and Center for Philosophy of Science at Boston University, explaining the phenomenon of “convergent evolution.”
“We invite the community to share Friends and Family Weekend with us, as we showcase the library as a friendly meeting place and cultural hub for patrons of all ages,” said Amy G. Bass, president of the FOL.
