The staff at Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths & Adults (HKNC) are mobilizing their forces for this year’s annual Helen’s Run/Walk, which will take place on Sunday, April 19, at the Sands Point Preserve. The course will offer participants panoramic views of Sands Point as they run or walk with a purpose – to support people who live with a combined vision and hearing loss. The race will be supervised by Start to Finish Corp., based in Long Beach, Long Island.
Some participants have already formed teams, like Miles for Megan. Miles for Megan honors the memory of Megan Bookstaver, an “amazing and beautiful woman who cared deeply for the people and animals that she came into contact with,” said team captains Lori Bookstaver (Megan’s mom, a Development Associate for HKNC) and Jennifer Jenkins, Megan’s cousin. Megan’s life was tragically cut short in September 2013. Born and raised in Hicksville, Megan graduated from Hicksville High School in 2008, working for several years at the Woodbury Road Veterinary Hospital in Plainview. She was an honors student and senior at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry at the time of her death.
“Her joy and excitement for life lives on through each and every one of us,” said Jenkins. “We are excited to be able to celebrate Megan’s life and support a cause that impacts our community.”
The entry fee for the event is $25 for adults and $15 for those 18 years old or under. After April 16, and on the day of the event, entry is $30 for adults and $20 for 18 and under. Registration takes place from 7:45 to 9 a.m. The official start is 9:30 a.m. Individuals of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate.
