The Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation is sponsoring its 4th Annual LSLF Ride for Research Bike Tour on May 17. This year, the Tour will feature routes of 21, 14 and 3.3 miles to accommodate the diverse skills and ages of participants.
“The short tour is fun for children, the long tours are challenging for adults due to their varied terrains, and walkers will enjoy the scenic short tour,” said Evelyn Strauss, president of LSLF. All tours begin at the Port Washington Train Station in the Haven Avenue Lot and take participants through areas of Port Washington and the Incorporated Villages of Flower Hill, Manorhaven, Plandome and Sands Point.
The ride benefits the foundation and its work toward finding cause and cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease, and multiple myeloma and allied cancers. A marrow drive will take place at the event, enabling potential donors to sign up in the hope of saving lives. It entails nothing more than a cheek swab. No advance registration for donors is necessary.
The ride is being held in conjunction with Port Washington Bicycles and its owner, Ralph Intintoli. It honors both Ralph’s late wife, Laura Ann Intintoli, and Lauri Strauss, daughter of Evelyn and the late Herb Strauss, sister of Julie Safran. Both Laura Ann and Lauri succumbed to dreaded blood cancers at much too early ages.
All event participants will receive a t-shirt and complimentary raffle ticket. Many local businesses will also assist with the event by holding special Port Washington shopping days from May 13 to May 20 that benefit LSLF.
