The Port Washington Soccer Club presented Schreiber High School 2015 graduates Ledner Giron and Robert Palmer with the annual Joe Cohen and Tyler Rauzon scholarships, respectively.

The Joe Cohen Award, which  has been presented annually for over 10 years, was established by the Port Washington Soccer  Club to honor Joseph Cohen, a  gifted athlete who attended college on a soccer scholarship. He went on to achieve outstanding success, first academically and then in his professional life. He also gave his time and heart to innumerable charitable endeavors.

“Considering the praise heaped on both Giron and Palmer by their coaches and peers, I can’t think of more deserving student athletes,” said Dan Brotman, vice president of competition for the Port Washington Soccer Club.

The $1,000 Joe Cohen Scholarship is presented annually to the graduating male or female varsity soccer player with the highest scholastic average, who has consistently played for the Port Washington Soccer Club. “My experience playing with the Port Washington Soccer Club has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” reflected Giron. “Playing on a team who looked at me as a brother was something unimaginable. We went through good seasons and bad seasons, but we stayed together and always pulled through as a team in the end. My overall experience with the Port Washington Soccer Club is truly irreplaceable.”

The $500 Tyler Rauzon Scholarship, presented this year to Robert Palmer, is selected based upon a “demonstrated love and desire for the game, a strong work ethic on the field and off and exemplary character, sportsmanship and sense of team play.”

“I am very honored to have received the Tyler Rauzon Scholarship Award. Many of my teammates could have been cited, and I am humbled to have been the one selected,” said Palmer. “My passion for the game began in kindergarten and under Port Washington Soccer Club Coach Neil Ioannou, I have developed my skills, leadership and sportsmanship. My teammates have become some of my best friends, and I will certainly miss playing alongside them.”

In addition to receiving commemorative plaques, both winners had their names added to the Joe Cohen and Tyler Rauzon trophies, which are located in Schreiber High School’s Hallway of Champions.
