The North Shore Kayak Club, Brownie Troop 2607 and local families successfully joined forces to clean Leeds Pond Preserve beach in Plandome as part of the annual American Littoral Society International Coastal Cleanup. Not only is the trash and refuse picked up off the beach, every single piece is cataloged to help learn what type of trash is floating in our waterways.
While Leeds Pond Beach seemed cleaner than in years past, the day’s collection efforts further helped to preserve this beautiful beachfront.
Thirty-two adults and children collected and cataloged about 70 pounds of trash, including 561 small pieces of glass and plastic, 78 food wrappers, 71 cigarette butts and enough beverage and food containers for a small army. Larger beach debris include a folding chair, a floor mat, tires and two-by-fours. An odd-shaped bone was found by one of the children. A picture of the bone was sent to the American Littoral Northeast chapter office for further identification.
Spearheading the cleanup effort was North Shore Kayak Club member Patricia Valente. This was the eighth consecutive year that the club participated in this national effort.
