On Oct. 18, select boats from the Manhasset Crew team competed in the 51st annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, MA.
This historical regatta has been an autumn tradition since 1965, and Manhasset’s team has participated in the world’s largest two-day regatta since 2007. The Head of the Charles Regatta draws more than 9,000 athletes from around the globe and over 300,000 spectators to the banks of Boston’s Charles River.
Adding to the excitement of this spectacular event is navigating the 3-mile upstream race course, which starts at the Boston University boathouse and includes twisting turns through seven triple-arch bridges, making this one of the most challenging courses in the world, even for experienced competitors. As the crews race against each other and against the clock, the coxswain’s job in steering the course is particularly difficult in this regatta, as they maneuver around sharp bends and buoys and through narrow arched bridges, along with such a large number of boats.
Manhasset was qualified to enter a Men’s Varsity 8 boat, Women’s Varsity 4 boat and a Women’s Varsity Double. Athletes were selected for “seats” in the boat after several intense weeks of timed erg testing and seat racing.

Alternates selected to accompany the team included rowers Sam Foglio, Anthony Raimondi, Irene Karantzios and Ariana Jacono.
The Manhasset coaches also participated in this elite event.
Coach Ty Louis raced with his father, Daniel, in the Director’s Challenge Parent/Child Doubles finishing sixth place out of a pool of 40.
Coach Stephen Lambers raced in the Men’s Club Singles.
Manhasset alumni Dagmara Lapins (Princeton ’17) competed for Princeton in the elite Women’s Championship 8 boat placing an impressive fourth place. Congratulations to all the Manhasset athletes who participated in this world class rowing event.
