SEPTA’s Gifted & Talented Division began the year with over 100 people attending their Mad Science Fire & Ice show at the Manhasset Library on Oct. 14, Superintendent’s Conference Day. The children in the audience participated in all demonstrations and were entertained by Xenon Zach, our local scientist.
He showed everyone how “Eggbert,” his pet egg which was too large to fit into a glass container, could get safely in and out in one piece using different properties of air pressure.
Zach demonstrated why some things float on air and some fall using straws and hair dryers, but when he brought out the leaf blower, the children couldn’t contain themselves.
He also had four volunteers take a “Mad science shower” with frozen gas in front of the audience.
The brave children who waited out a fire drill caused by a faulty light towards the end of the program got a special treat. They got to touch and experience a foggy ice storm created by dry ice.
An expert presentation is offered on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. that reviews how parents can enrich gifted students and effective methods for educating gifted students. Manhasset SEPTA Gifted and Talented division will have Tobi J. Phillips, EdD., president and founder of Village East Gifted, Inc., discuss what parents and educators can do to best support brilliant children. The presentation takes place at the Manhasset Public Library Community Room on the lower level. Parents, educators and school staff are encouraged to attend this free event. Light refreshments will be served.
Village East Gifted, Inc. is an enrichment program for gifted students ages 4 to 18 across Long Island. With 35+ years of experience, Dr. Phillips has worked with students ranging from academically-challenged to the highly-gifted and conducted workshops in LI school districts providing guidance to thousands of families raising gifted children.
Dr. Phillips will review the Village East Gifted’s Approach to Gifted Education and share their highly effective methods for educating gifted children by Phillips RBM (Reawakening Brilliant Minds) Approach. Attendees will also learn how highly intelligent learners can become engaged, challenged and “entertained” by the “simultaneous stimulation of their multiple intelligences”. The academic, emotional, social and cognitive needs of gifted children will be discussed as well as suggestions for effectively raising happy and intellectually-satisfied gifted children. There will be an open “ask the expert” Q-and-A immediately following the presentation.

Manhasset SEPTA Gifted and Talented Programming has started programming for the school year with First Time French, a seven week program that introduces the French language, food and culture to children in second to fifth grades.
