OBITSIMON111115Daniel Maurice Simon, beloved father, grandfather, uncle, engineer, coworker, sailor, and friend, died peacefully on Nov. 1 at the age of 90 at the Amsterdam in Port Washington. Dan’s kindness, humor, generosity, honesty, and wisdom left an impression on everyone he met and he will be missed dearly.

A resident of Port Washington and Plandome Manor for 57 years, Dan was born in 1925 in New York City to William and Mildred Simon and grew up with his brother Robert. He received a degree in Civil Engineering from City University of New York after serving as a navigator in World War II. He met his cherished, late wife Barbara Unger at Camp Woodland and they wed in 1948, moved to Port Washington in 1958, and raised their family in Port Washington until 1977 when they moved to Plandome Manor.

Dan worked for The We’re Group as Director of Construction for 40 years, and led the construction of countless buildings throughout Long Island, including the Lake Success Quadrangle, Huntington Quadrangle and Jericho Quadrangle. In his free time, he was an avid sailor, racing Ensigns and Sonars with his children and friends most weekends in the summer for 50 years.

Dan is survived by his daughter (Jennifer Simon of New York City), son and daughter-in-law (Bill and Joni Simon of Port Washington), his granddaughters and their husbands (Samantha and Charles McBride of Colorado and Ellen and Matthew Volo of Virginia) and his nephews and nieces.

Dan will be laid to rest with his wife at Nassau Knolls Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be sent to the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation.
