The autumn varsity sports season is well on its way in Oyster Bay. Many young athletes have distinguished themselves. Steven Shoemaker is varsity football head coach Joe Knoll’s pick for Athlete of the Month.
“Steven is an outstanding leader on the field and off for the football team,” said Knoll. “As a two-year starter, he has played wide receiver, defensive back and this year has taken over full time duty as the quarterback. Steve has been instrumental in running the offense and consistently makes key passes to help the Baymen keep possession and control of the game. On defense he possesses great coverage skills and is an adroit tackler. Steve’s leadership skills have been instrumental in bringing the team together and has helped the team have a successful start to the season with a 4-2 record.”
Varsity volleyball head coach Diana Boucher selected senior Dana Galgano, a second-year varsity player who has been a great asset to the team.
“As a co-captain, she serves as a positive role model for all players,” said Boucher. “Dana is an outside hitter for us and averages two kills a game. Her aggressive serve gets us the lead in crucial times. Dana has improved her defensive part of the game and it has helped us out all season. Dana is energetic and compassionate for the sport and her positive attitude is contagious to all. She will be greatly missed next season.”
The new crew program is underway in Oyster Bay. The girls crew head coach Manny Delgado chose Arianna Paone as the rowing team’s Athlete of the Month.
Delgado said, “As our only varsity girl, she was Oyster Bay High School’s first athlete to represent the school in its newly accepted varsity status. Arianna raced on Oct. 11 at the Head of the Quinobequin in Boston, in the under-17 women’s division. In addition to Arianna’s racing, she has played a critical role in introducing the sport to the other 16 varsity athletes (both boys and girls) that now represent Oyster Bay High School. OBHS Rowing races next in Philadelphia, at the Head of the Schuylkill regatta.”
The boys varsity crew head coach Jay Kelly said, “Ryan Adell has been selected as the OBHS boys varsity crew athlete of the month. Ryan has shown extensive enthusiasm for his new sport and has displayed vast improvement throughout the season. Ryan has been attending practices regularly and has been improving with each day whether practicing on the water or on land. Ryan has demonstrated dedication and commitment and is a true team player. He has proven to be an asset to the Baymen Rowing Team.”
