Dr. Linda F. Burghardt, scholar-in-residence at the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center, will tell the story of Yiddish, from its origins in the Middle Ages to its steep decline after the Holocaust. The lecture will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center, located on the Welwyn Preserve, 100 Crescent Beach Rd. in Glen Cove. The lecture is the free and open to the public. Attendees can tour the award-winning museum after the lecture.
For many, the earliest words they remember learning as children were in Yiddish, the language of home, of family, of warmth and cooking and close-knit community. But where did Yiddish come from? What are its roots? In this presentation, Dr. Burghardt will talk about the enormous literary, musical and scholarly contributions made in Yiddish throughout history and its interconnectedness with the traditions of Yiddishkeit, and examine rumors of its surprising resurgence in modern culture around the world. Is Yiddish still the best language in which to complain? To insult someone? To connect with the past?
Dr. Burghardt is a journalist and author from Great Neck. She worked as a freelance reporter for The New York Times for 20 years and is the author of three nonfiction books. Her articles and essays have appeared in newspapers throughout the U.S., and she has lectured to both national and international audiences. She holds a PhD from LIU Post and is the daughter of Holocaust survivors from Vienna.
