Massive Clean-up Limited Clearance

snow moundHaving braved through storm relatively unharmed, the clean up of Jonas is now the focus. The streets in Manhasset have been plowed but with the considerable accumulation, there is no place to put the snow unless it is carted away. There is limited clearance on street and roads in a number of areas. Travel carefully.

In the King Kullen shopping center, great mounds of snow tower at the back of the parking lot practically two stories high. At the Americana, large mountains of snow have been pushed aside to enable parking of vehicles. Last year, the Americana hired a melting machine and has melted the snow. With over two feet of snow, the question is where to put it. Snow drifts have been measured at five feet in areas.

In Munsey Park, the village had been working on making sure visibility was clear at every corner. With the plowing and moving of massive snow drifts visibility on street corners are impaired both in the village and throughout Manhasset.

Double lane roads like Northern Blvd. have one and one half lane cleared and bus shelters are unusable due to the massive snow amounts and drifts causing bus riders to stand on the boulevard creating dangerous situations for commuters. Please travel slowly and wisely to avoid any pedestrian accidents.

On Plandome Road, the road allows for two way traffic; however, street parking on Plandome Road causes automobiles to travel into oncoming traffic. Street parking areas were not fully cleared due to the large amount of snow and pedestrian are urged to be cautious.

The Town of North Hempstead has reminded residents that streets need to be cleared of snow for pedestrian traffic and that summons will be given.•    Under the Town Code, every resident in charge of any property within the Town is required to clear the snow and ice from sidewalks in front their property at least four hours after snow has stopped, except between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.
•    North Hempstead’s Code Enforcement Department will inspect areas to ensure sidewalks are passable for pedestrians.
•    If you are a commercial property owner or the owner of a multi-residential property adjacent to a fire hydrant, you are required under the Town Code to remove snow and ice from around the hydrant for a distance of two feet, and between the sidewalk and curb within four hours after the snowfall has ended, except between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.
•    If sidewalks are not maintained, tickets will be issued.
•    The Town Code also states that businesses must keep handicap parking spots usable for parking purposes.
•    Even if a business is closed after the snow storm, merchants are still responsible for clearing the sidewalks.
