With the prediction of an early spring on Groundhog Day, winter has surely packed a punch for New Yorkers with snow and icy roads, causing more than just headaches to local Manhasset store owners. Several accidents have occurred due to icy conditions, and perhaps distractions, which have caused automobiles to plow into storefronts.
On Tuesday, Feb. 9, a car plowed into the front of Misaki Restaurant at 411 Plandome Rd. There were reports of a car sliding by the Post Office and a third car had its tire come off from a broken axle. Pedestrian traffic in Manhasset is considerable, especially with students walking to school, commuters rushing to trains and customers visiting retail locations. These were a few of the many accidents that occurred this winter in Manhasset. Several have occurred throughout the region. All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles provide power to your tires to grip the road—it is a system that is optimized for severe off-road conditions, not ice. Use common sense.
AAA recommends “If you find yourself skidding on a wet road, steer the wheel toward the direction in which you want to go. Take your foot off the gas and the brakes, which often cause skidding in the first place. One way to cut down on the chances of skidding is to drive more slowly on slick roads.”
Keep these thoughts in mind and drive slower when conditions are brutal outside. Black ice is a hazard that cannot be seen. The caution you take may save a life, probably your own.
