Last Wednesday, several of the Town of North Hempstead’s most dedicated women were recognized for their commitment to the community and improving the quality of life for all of those around them. Westbury residents Jackie Caines and Mary Campbell were among the 13 women honored for their service and added to the May W. Newburger Women’s Roll of Honor.
“Each of our honorees have truly made a difference in their neighborhood,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “We are fortunate to call these honorees part of our North Hempstead family.”
Both women have exemplified a commitment to Westbury and New Cassel, playing an active role in trying to make the communities a better place to live.
Caines said her children’s experience growing up in New Cassel motivated her to get involved and give back to others.
“When my children got older, I realized how important the time, energy and effort my family, community and church put in was,” Caines said. “I realized the only thing to do was to give back to help another child. I give back for everyone who helped me and my husband raise our children.”
When she’s not working as a payroll analyst with Barnes & Noble, Inc., Caines can be found serving with the numerous community organizations she is involved with. A 57-year resident of New Cassel and graduate of Westbury High School, Caines has served as PTA president and vice president, as well as den mother for Boy Scout Troop no. 233 of Westbury and assisted with the Westbury Brownie troop.
She’s also an active member of the First Baptist Cathedral of Westbury. For more than 50 years, she has served as financial secretary to the trustee ministry, and co-president of the deaconess ministry. She’s also a board member of the Unified New Cassel Community Revitalization Corporation, where she serves as treasurer and financial advisor for the community vacation camp.
Caines is also a member of the Westbury/New Cassel NAACP and a block captain for Roman Avenue, a service she said she is especially passionate about. In this role, she helps maintain her block’s cleanliness, keeps residents informed of upcoming events and plays a major role in the revitalization of New Cassel.
“It’s time consuming and takes a tremendous amount of energy to keep up your community and help those who don’t have the tools or ability to do it,” Caines said, noting that the town helps in the efforts to keep the community clean. “We try to keep the community livable, a place where the children can go out and play in the yards and parks without finding an unsightly scene.”
Jackie and her husband Alan have two children, Rodney Caines (Traci) and Laura Caines-Giralde (Michael Giralde). She is the proud grandmother of Te`a Caines, Troy Caines, Toni Caines and Tristan Caines.
Also being honored at last Wednesday’s recognition breakfast at Harbor Links was Campbell, who has served in leadership positions with a variety of community groups.
Since retiring as a Port Washington Weber Middle School teacher, Campbell has enjoyed serving in her community and other Long Island communities. She is a member of Westbury United Methodist Church, where she has served in many capacities for more than 35 years, presently serving as president of Westbury United Methodist Women. A 60-year member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. she served as president of her local chapter, Nassau Alumnae Chapter 1995–99. Currently she serves on the protocol and traditions committee. Campbell also devotes time to Long Island Tuskegee Alumni Association and is a past president, currently serving on the Alumni Scholarship and Special Affairs Committee. One Sunday, monthly, she also chairs her local investment club (SFIC).
Her daily routine includes active involvement at the Westbury Senior Center. She has also served as president of Westbury Senior Center Membership. Today she enjoys being a member of the center with friends and neighbors, and participates in classes, celebrations, games and activities, and is a member of the center-based Red Hat Society.
Campbell still finds time for daily meditations and reading as well as scrapbooking her travels around the globe and United States. She attends weekly Bible study, does literacy volunteer work, volunteers and supports Cub Scout Troop #233, in addition to volunteering at North Shore Service Men’s Shelter. Campbell serves on the Sherwood Civic Association Board and supports the activities and ceremonies of her daughter, Karin B. Campbell (2014) who she is honored to join on the Women’s Honor Roll. Campbell also enjoys her three grandchildren (Celia, Maya and Adam) and one great grandson (Zy’mari).
