This year about 30 volunteers came out to place flags on the graves of veterans at Port Washington’s Nassau Knolls Cemetery on Port Washington Boulevard on Sunday, May 29. The event was organized by Vic Constantino, who has been organizing the event since the 1980s. Constantino and his wife, Margie, a crossing guard in Port, were pleased with the turnout this year.
“We have veterans here from World War I, World War II and there are even Civil War veterans here,” said Vic. “It’s important to keep up the tradition of honoring them on Memorial Day.”
Also at the event was Gerry May, along with his children Jackie and Peter. Gerry’s father, Donald May, started the flagging of the graves event back in the 1950s.
“We are happy so many people came out to the event this year,” said Gerry.
The flags are placed on the graves the day before Memorial Day and retrieved the day after.
