Local Runners Invited To Sands Point Race

LOCAL RUNNERS INVITED TO LYNN, GARTNER, DUNNE & COVELLO SANDS POINT SPRINT

Runners and walkers from the Port Washington peninsula and all over Long Island and beyond are invited to join in the fun for what is one of the most unusual 5 Kilometer courses on Long Island, at the Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, Lynn, Gartner, Dunne & Covello Sands Point Sprint.

The Mineola law firm of  Lynn, Gartner, Dunne & Covello will be returning as the Lead Sponsor of the event, and partners John Dunne and Ken Gartner are both planning on running the race.  (Ken Gartner finished last year’s Sprint in 28:13 and John Dunne finished last year’s Sprint in 33:30, and both of them are looking to break those marks in 2016).

This year’s Sprint will once again benefit the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings world-wide, through the creation of Sunrise Day Camps, Year-Round Programs and In-Hospital Recreational Activities, all offered free of charge. Sunrise Day Camps are the world’s only full-summer day camps for children with cancer and their siblings. The fun, friendship and smiles continue year round through various camp-like programs and in-hospital services.

The 5K Sprint presents runners and walkers with an opportunity to traverse a unique combination of paved roads and runner-friendly woodland trails at the Sands Point Preserve.

The 216 acre Sands Point Preserve is an unparalleled mixture of natural and landscaped areas.  Forests, meadows, beach and cliffs, gardens and a freshwater pond provide habitats for a variety of plants and animals.  The proximity of all these different habitats provided us with a unique opportunity to create a 5K course that will enable all the runners and walkers to experience the various aspects of the entire Preserve. This is an unforgettable course and will be an unforgettable experience.

Runners and walkers who sign up for the Run can expect all the usual Greater Long Island Running Club amenities – awards in 5 year age groups running from 10 and under through 85 plus, as well as Clydesdale/Athena Awards, a top quality commemorative T shirt to every entrant, and a nice variety of post race door prizes. Once again this year, the post-Run festivities will include some superb post – race refreshments courtesy of DiMaggio’s Trattoria and refreshing craft beers courtesy of Greenpoint Harbor Brewing Company.

Local runners have always played a big role in the Sands Point Sprint.  In the 2015 edition of the event, a large local contingent was led by Michael Lewis of Port Washington, who finished in 16th place overall and took home the second place award in the 40-44 age group.
