Village of East Williston Mayor David Tanner recently gave an update on the village’s efforts to increase security, following a packed community forum last month on burglaries in the area.
At their July village board meeting, Tanner said he has been working closely with the Nassau County Police Department Third Precinct to increase patrols in the area, and reported on a new camera system in Devlin Field.
“It was recently approved by the village, and while it may not prevent criminal activity, it will give us increased surveillance,” Tanner said. “It does tend to be somewhat screened, which is a benefit, but also a problem in monitoring the area.”
Tanner also said the village board is in the process of establishing a security committee and several residents have been reached out to in the hopes of joining.
“The committee would be very helpful to the village in helping us devise what might be some reasonable alternatives for us to take over and above the services otherwise we would be receiving from Nassau County police,” Tanner said. “We’ll have more about that as time goes on.”
According to village officials, the dollar amount for the security cameras has been budgeted for and has not yet been installed. There is electrical wiring involved which must be coordinated with outside agencies. An estimated cost is pending a proposal being put in writing for the cameras.
Last month, Tanner had said the village is considering the installation of LPRs (license plate readers), other cameras in the village, community watch signs and increasing the use of email blast communications.
