Two winners of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (LAOH) began their college studies this fall. The scholarships were awarded by the St. Dymphna Division 8 Glen Cove to students whose mothers or grandmothers are active members of the LAOH.
Winner Isabella Hanley, daughter of Theresa and John, is the granddaughter of LAOH member Catherine Hanley. Winner Tara McGillicuddy, is the daughter of LAOH member Carolyn McGillicuddy and her husband Tom.
Tara, a graduate of North Shore High School, is attending Boston University. During her high school years, she volunteered at Glen Cove Hospital, which influenced her decision to study medical technology.
Isabella, a graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Academy, is attending Ithaca College. Among other activities during her high school years, she was the editor of the school magazine Windows. She will pursue studies in the literary field.
The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians is a national organization of Catholic women of Irish heritage who gather under the motto “Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity.” In Nassau County there are five divisions. Women from neighboring towns (Locust Valley, Sea Cliff, Bayville, Glen Head, Old Brookville, Roslyn) and other towns on Long Island are members of Division 8 Glen Cove. Members are involved in many charitable and social activities throughout the year. This year, 2016, is the fourth year in which LAOH scholarships have been awarded.
