Jaslin Kaur, a resident of Floral Park and a student at Nassau Community College (NCC), was recently named the recipient of a 2017 State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.
To qualify for the award, students were reviewed by a college committee for academic excellence and record of service to NCC and the community.
“On behalf of Nassau Community College, I want to congratulate our students on receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s award for academic excellence,” said Dr. W. Hubert Keen, President of NCC. “The college takes great pride in this recognition, which continues a long tradition of academic achievement here at Nassau Community College.”
Kaur is president of the NCC Women’s Student Association and the college’s Speech, Debate and Acting Team. She convened with young leaders from around the world at the United Nations for the International Young Leaders Assembly. Her honors include induction into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Phi Rho Pi Forensics Honor Society and the New York Pi Kappa Delta National Forensics Honor Society. Most recently, she became a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow. Kaur’s fellowship term will run from August 2017 through May 2018. During her fellowship year, Campus Compact will provide her with access to a variety of virtual and in-person learning opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows.
“It is my honor to celebrate the achievements of students who have surpassed SUNY’s highest standards of academic excellence and leadership both on and off campus,” said SUNY Chancellor Zimpher. “Every student we recognize has demonstrated a strong commitment to their degree program, home campus, greater community, and much more. The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement or career achievement.
