Following an assault that occurred in Farmingdale on Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3:15 a.m., police have announced the arrest of 28-year-old Jonathan Bencosme in connection with the crime.
According to detectives, the incident began with a verbal confrontation between Bencosme, of Merrick, and a small group of men that included a 34-year-old male victim and a 27-year-old male victim, while in the rear parking lot of 333 Main St. When the argument escalated, Bencosme punched the 34-year-old male in the face, causing him to fall to the floor and rendering him unconscious. Becosme then entered into the driver’s seat of a nearby 2015 Ford, reversed it and began accelerating it toward the unconscious victim and a small crowd of about ten people, including the 27-year-old male, who was supplying aid.
The defendant’s vehicle struck the 27-year-old male on the left side of his body and tossed him several feet. Meanwhile, the unconscious male victim was run over by both the front and rear passenger tires of the defendant’s vehicle.
Following the incident, Bencosme sped away onto Rose Street. Police report that the 34-year-old male victim suffered a cranial hemorrhage, skull fracture and broke both of his arms, requiring surgery. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The 27-year-old victim was also taken to the hospital, receiving treatment for pain in his shoulders, hips and both knees.
Bencosme surrendered to Second Squad detectives on Tuesday, Feb. 20, and was placed into police custody. He was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment. Bencosme was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
