Celebrate the holiday season with events in Port Washington
It’s December and the holiday season is finally upon us. It’s a time to gather together with your friends, family and those you care about to celebrate the holidays. Get in the spirit and celebrate without having to travel far. Here are some local events in and around Port Washington taking place this holiday season.
Homebrew Music Holiday Event
Ale’Port Bar & Grill in Port Washington will be hosting a holiday event to benefit the Community Chest of Port Washington on Dec. 7 at 8:30 p.m. The event will feature a night of live music and beer, with a holiday theme. Ale’Port Bar & Grill is located at 611 Port Washington Blvd.
Annual Christmas Tree Lighting
Port Washington will be holding its annual Christmas tree lighting on Dec. 8 at 4:30 p.m. The community will be honoring the Port Washington Fire Department during the ceremony, and some of the members of the fire department will do the honor of lighting the tree this year. The event will feature a live nativity scene and music from St. Peter’s School, chorus members and the brass band, followed by a visit from Santa. The tree lighting will kick off at Blumenfeld Family Park, located at 232 Main St. in Port Washington.
Ice Skating
Ice skating is the perfect winter holiday activity. The Port Washington Skating Center, located at 70 Seaview Blvd. in Port Washington, is a great place to meet up with friends, neighbors or family for an afternoon of fun and exercise. General skating takes place every Saturday from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. Every Sunday from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. is family skating day. Admission for all ages is $9. Skate rentals are $5. Landmark On Main Street
The Blind Boys of Alabama, the “living legends of gospel music,” will be preforming a Christmas show at the Landmark On Main Street on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. The Blind Boys are known for crossing multiple musical boundaries with their remarkable interpretations of everything from traditional gospel favorites to contemporary spiritual material by songwriters such as Eric Clapton, Prince and Tom Waits. Special guests Sammy Miller and the Congregation will open the show. Tickets range from $55 to $80 and can be purchased at www.landmarkonmainstreet.org.
Celebrate Christmas with a performance at the Landmark on Main Street with a performance by Cherish the Ladies A Celtic Christmas on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Cherish the Ladies are a Grammy Award-nominated Irish-American supergroup. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $31 to 46 and can be purchased at www.landmarkonmainstreet.org.
David Glukh Enterprises presents an afternoon of Klezmer, Jazz and holiday classics performed on signature piccolo trumpet accompanied by piano at the Landmark on Main Street on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. for tea and refreshments. Showtime is 2 p.m. No tickets or reservations are required.
At The Library
Holiday Favorites: “The Most Wonderful Songs Of The Year”
Hearing holiday music can instantly fill our minds with the smell of pine, the taste of eggnog and the warmth of a bright burning fire, but did you know that “Jingle Bells” was originally meant to be a Thanksgiving song? Join Dan Lupo at the PWPL on Dec. 13 as he helps us discover the story behind some of your holiday favorites while we learn why they truly are the most wonderful songs of the year. From 12:15 to 2 p.m.
Petra Puppets: Holiday Talent Show
Visit the PWPL on Dec. 26 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Lapham meeting room. The Holiday Talent Show is a ventriloquist puppet show featuring comedy illusions, music and a cast of big mouth puppet characters. Starring: Mr Freeze the Penguin, Turkey Opera, The Great Chimpini: Monkey Magician, Krusty the Donut and Kevin the Carsick Rabbit, plus audience participation. For elementary school children in grades kindergarten and up with an adult. Made possible by the Children’s Advisory Council. Registration begins Dec. 16 at 9 a.m.
Angel Tree
Give back this holiday season by helping children who are less fortunate. A long-standing tradition at the Dolphin Bookshop & Cafe in Port Washington is their angel tree. Visit the angel tree, select a card inscribed with a child’s name and age and donate a gift that will arrive in time for Christmas. The tradition takes place through Dec. 15.
Make A Child Smile Toy And Food Drive
The Port Washington Chamber of Commerce and detective Anthony Guzzello are holding the annual toy and food drive. Drop off donations of non-perishable and new unwrapped toys to any of the nineteen locations throughout Port Washington now until Dec. 16. All donations go to children in Port Washington. Donation checks are also welcome and will be used to purchase toys and food at stores in Port Washington. Checks may be made payable to Chamber of Commerce Toy Fund and mailed to the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce P.O. Box 121, Port Washington, NY 11050.
