Oyster Bay-East Norwich first-graders from Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School gathered at the school on March 21 with their family members for First Grade Social Studies Night. This marked the third year that Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School held this engaging event for all first-grade students and their families.
At the start of the evening, students and their family members received a warm welcome from staff, Principal Devra Small and Director of Humanities Tami McElwee. Members of Oyster Bay High School’s Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society were also introduced with their adviser David Pontillo. The students assisted with the event.
Throughout the evening, the first-graders rotated to five different classrooms/stations in the school and participated in activities related to Theodore Roosevelt, the United States, history and more. They sang patriotic songs, created their own teddy bear in honor of Theodore Roosevelt, played social studies bingo, completed puzzles of the United States and learned about Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation efforts while planting their own seeds.
Students and their families had fun learning the importance of being an active and engaged citizen as the stations supported social studies concepts in history, geography, economics, government and civic participation.
In addition, the school partnered with the Theodore Roosevelt Association of Oyster Bay to support Teddy Bear for Kids during the event. Teddy Bear for Kids is a program that gives teddy bears to young patients in hospitals around the country to provide some comfort. A donation box was stationed in the school’s lobby for families to support the cause.
The event was a great success and the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District thanks all those who attended.
