With all the makings of a celebration, the Levittown Swimming Association (LSA) kicked off its 54th season of keeping Levittown’s youth fit, involved, and safe last Saturday with its appropriately named first swim meet of the year – Relay Carnival.
“You can have all the meetings and practices you want, but there is just something about that first meet that makes it really feel like the season has begun,” said Paul Esposito, president of the Levittown Swimming Association. “And by having the first meet be entirely relays, it helps promote team spirit and unity.”
As brothers, sisters, and family members looked on, the season got under way at the Jerusalem Avenue pool. Children ranging from as young as 5 to 18 years old participated in LSA’s Relay Carnival.
“I look forward to seeing those familiar faces every summer,” said Caitlin Nupp, head coach of the Wolcott team. “LSA brings out over 300 kids each year, and I am always excited to see new swimmers join the team as well.”
Each team represents one of the Levittown pools and is made up of swimmers who live around their team pool, sometimes pitting school friends on opposing teams.
“What better way to build a sense of community and camaraderie than with a little friendly competition,” added Steven Dalton, who serves as the organization’s recording secretary. “Daily practices and several meets throughout the summer culminate with championship weekend in August and the crowning of a champion.”
A certified non-profit organization, the Levittown Swimming Association is run entirely by volunteers and holds regular meetings. The next two scheduled meetings are for July 30 and Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. at the Town of Hempstead’s Salisbury Park Administrative Building, which is located at the intersection of Carmen Avenue and Salisbury Park Drive in East Meadow.
