As his new album Weightless proves, his confessional style, sleek guitar, soaring voice and pop-sweet melodicism make him an uncannily effective political singer.

Hofstra Celebratory Dance Concert

Hofstra’s Dance Program is celebrating its silver anniversary with a fall dance concert reuniting some of its most successful alumni – now professional dancers – who will perform with their own dance companies and also choreograph sections of the performance for Hofstra dance students. These returning star alumni include Dina Denis, Class of 2002; Larry Keigwin, Class of 1993; Salvatore LaRussa, Class of 2000; and Makeda Thomas, Class of 1999. The concert will take place at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse on Hofstra’s South Campus. Show times are 8 p.m. on Nov. 20 and 21; 2 p.m. on Nov. 22. Tickets are $12; $10 seniors. St. Anne’s Church Thanksgiving Food Drive

The annual Saint Anne’s “Sponsor a Family” program is a community effort to provide families in need with Thanksgiving meals. Local outreach centers are reporting a substantial increase in the number of families that are struggling during this economic downturn. To sponsor a family at the Gerald & Louise Kaiser Outreach Center in Uniondale call: Ann Sweeney (481-1156), Diane Lobasso (326-2392) or Diane Wykowski (747-8398). To sponsor a family at the Gerald Ryan Outreach Center in Wyandanch call: Pat Gunther (741-7688), Kathy Dixon (328-2943), Jackie Bingham (741-0228), Helen Capece (327-9179) or Maureen McCaughey (488-4965). The collection of meals will take place in St. Anne’s Church parking lot on Nov. 21 and 22. You can also make a monetary donation. Family Barn Dance

Bring the whole family, especially the kids and grandparents, to a fun-filled evening of live music and dancing. A caller will instruct country-style dances, while musicians from the LI Traditional Music Association (www.litma.org) provide lively folk music. The dance runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Westbury Friends Community Center, 550 Post Ave., Westbury. Cost: free for under 18; $7 adults. Refreshments will be provided; snack table donations appreciated. The dance is presented by the LI Traditional Music Association, in conjunction with Westbury Friends Meeting. Christmas Fair

At the Hillside United Methodist Church, 2801 Hillside Ave., New Hyde Park (between Marcus Ave. and Herricks Rd.), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Featuring handmade items by the members of the church including afghans, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations and cakes. The Nutcracker

Café Ablaze

Café Ablaze Christian Coffeehouse celebrates its one-year anniversary with an evening of outstanding entertainment and abundant delectable refreshments. All are invited to bring a friend and relax at candlelit tables, while enjoying flavored coffees, assorted desserts, fresh fruit, and gelato. Featured entertainment will be local Christian musician, Cathy Virgilio. Cathy has sung professionally for many years in various groups ranging from folk and jazz to classic rhythm and blues. Let Freedom Ring: A Salute to Veterans

The season opening performance of the Northwinds Symphonic Band, will be held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum at 2:30 p.m. The concert pays tribute to all those brave Americans, past and present, who have selflessly answered the call to duty. The repertoire will include music associated with the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and the wars of the 20th and 21st century, featuring works by Aaron Copland, James Hosay, Clare Grundman and William Billings. The program will also feature patriotic American standards and the music of Broadway during times of war. Guest artists will include a vocalist and dancers who will “strut their stuff” to the Big Band Music of the ‘40s. Admission is free, and, in addition, the Cradle of Aviation museum is offering a buy one get one free admission to the exhibits on the day of the concert.

President’s and Principal’s Dinner

Today will mark the 50th time PTA presidents, school administrators and invited guests from across Nassau County have gathered together to enjoy a special evening celebrating the collaboration between school and community. Held at the Crest Hollow Country Club, the distinguished guest speaker will be National PTA President Chuck Saylors. In addition to what is certain to be an informative and motivating speech by President Saylors, entertainment will be provided by some of Nassau County’s talented students from the LI High School for the Arts.

Bari Koral Family Band Presents “Rock-n-Roll Garden” CD Launch

Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 28 at 1 and 3 p.m. Bari Koral and the members of her Family Rock Band return to the Long Island Children Museum’s Theater to premiere their newest CD, Rock-n-Roll Garden with their favorite fans. Bari, along with jazz musician Dred Scott on bass and Broadway veteran Eric Halverson on drums, have been performing as the Bari Koral Family Rock Band since 2006. Move and groove to the rhythms of this universally loved musical style. Ages 3 and up. Fee: $4 with museum admission ($3 LICM members), $8 theater only. The Infancy Narratives: A Discussion and Comparison

How many Infancy Narratives are there? In which books of the Bible are they found? Three Magi are usually shown bringing gifts to Jesus Christ in a stable. How many Magi were there? Do we know their names? Where did they find him? Msgr. Charles A. Chiari 1 Malformation, Syringomyelia Informational Meeting

An informational support group meeting, focusing on day-to-day coping techniques. Have your questions answered, meet new friends, learn more about your condition and provide support for a loved one or a friend. Joe Crookston Serenades the Garden Stage

• Dec. 2: Actress Amber Tamblyn presents an Afternoon of Poetry at 2 p.m. Amber Tamblyn is an award-winning actress and poet whose latest book, Bang Ditto, offers poetic insights into what it’s like to be in the public eye since the age of eight. She came to fame on General Hospital, followed by a starring role in Joan of Arcadia. In film, she played the role of Tibby in the popular Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

Conducted by AAA New York in the Garden City office located at 229 Seventh St. The six-hour course allows participants to get the latest driving information from AAA-certified instructors, a 10 percent discount on collision and liability insurance and a reduction of up to four points from driver’s license.
