Daum and Medellin Are Elected to School Board
Voters in the Island Trees School District passed the proposed budget that called for a 3.5 percent tax levy increase. The passed budget of $57,020,084 was a 1.2 percent, increase from last year’s budget of $56,319,991.
The budget received 942 yes votes and 574 no votes, according to the school district’s clerk.
School Board President Peter Ray did not run for re-election. Running for his seat were Kristen Daum and Brian Kelty. Daum won that race with 975 votes, with Kelty receiving 338 votes.
School Board Vice President Carl Bonsignore also did not run for re-election. William Buchanan, Barbara Medellin and George Storm ran for his seat. Medellin won with 808 votes, Storm received 337 votes and Buchanan received 271 votes, according to the school district’s clerk.
The May 7, 2010 issue of the Levittown Tribune incorrectly said Daum and Kelty were running for the president position and Buchanan, Medellin, and Storm were running for vice president. The candidates were running for Ray’s and Bonsignore’s seats but the board has to elect a president and vice president; the winning candidates are not automatically named president and vice president.
For the 2010/11 school year the school district will be adopting the Princeton Model for its two elementary schools, combining kindergarten and first-grade students in the smaller of the two elementary schools, Sparke. Students in grades second through fourth will attend Stokes Elementary.
Superintendent Dr. Charles Murphy estimated the yearly savings under this model to be around $450,000 every year.
